100 Years Ago, October 13, 1906

GEORGE Pugh, an idle, drunken umbrella repairer from Hanover Street, was brought before Bromsgrove magistrates charged with neglecting his six children, whose ages ranged from 12 to three months. The case was brought by the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children. His long suffering wife Sarah told the court he eared between 12/- and 15/- a week, but he was always the worst for drink. She was having to raise her family on 5/2 a week and out of that she paid rent of 4/6. Pugh said business had recently been bad on account of the good summer. This failed to convince magistrates, who handed him a three months' sentence at Worcester Jail with hard labour.  more...

WE met in the village hall and had a very pleasant time combining the business with a celebration of Mary Wormington's special birthday - thank you Mary for contributing some delectable goodies made by your son-in-law and thank you Kate for making the delicious birthday cake. Dot Waldron, president, conducted business. She and Beryl Smith, our secretary, will be attending the 75th anniversary lunch of Stoke Prior WI on October 26. A petition was signed by our members in support of the Worcestershire Action on Radiotherapy Group. The speaker, Mrs Cadman, had brought some items for WFWI's craft loan collection to show and it was very touching to see and hear about these beautiful pieces of craftwork, which had been lovingly made by past members. AT the September meeting of the Bromsgrove and District Flower Arrangement Society, national demonstrator Setsuko Watanabe gave a very interesting and entertaining demonstration entitled autumn collection. Setsuko made six beautiful arrangements in both western and ikebana styles, which were raffled at the end of the afternoon. Our next meeting will take place at All Saints Church Hall, Burcot Lane, Bromsgrove, on Thursday, October 19, at 2.30pm, when Carolyn Gordon-Smith will be demonstrating picture perfect. The demonstration will be followed by tea or coffee and biscuits, plus the raffle. This month's flower arranging competition for members is entitled autumn collection and there will also be the usual flower of the month competition, when members may enter a flower at its best from their own garden.  more...
