SIR - There should be no doubt that the world is in the grip of cyclical change. Many of these changes are being hastened and exacerbated by human activities. Emissions from industry, land vehicles, including trains and planes, do make a difference.
On the other hand, walking and cycling involve healthy exercise. I was never a cyclist because I could not afford a bike. However, in my youth, I sometimes walked 25 miles in a day for pleasure. Would that I was still able to do so - I recommend walking to the young.
These matters have to be taken seriously. Therefore I applaud the council's move to create a new post "walk/cycle officer." The only criticism I have is that the salary offered seems somewhat low for such an important post. Mr Cole (Letters, December 21) and another correspondent have utterly wrong attitudes in regard to this matter.
As for the small images of cycles painted on pavements, these are no doubt, rightly or wrongly, intended to inform the elderly and the very young that it is all right to ride cycles on the pavement, so long as they have regard for the safety of others.
