New phenomenon on the motorways

From the archive, first published Monday 9th Jan 2006.

SIR - I wonder if any readers of Worcester News have noticed a new phenomenon when travelling on a motorway fitted with the expensive new illuminated message signs?

I call it the phantom queue syndrome. The sign flashes the message `slow down, queue ahead' and so everybody slows down and surprise, surprise, a queue forms where none existed before.

I tested this on the M1 the other day. There were loads of `slow down queue ahead messages' but every time you got past one the road was clear. After about 30 miles of these signs everybody ignored them and the traffic ran smoothly.

Now please don't get the impression that I advocate ignoring safety signs, I don't. It is just that they are not managed properly so they become ignored at everyone's peril. If you are going to have safety signage I think it should be relevant.

T A JAMES,

Drakes Broughton.
