CD - Mary Ann meets the Gravediggers and other short stories by Regina Spektor

From the archive, first published Wednesday 25th Jan 2006.

AN intriguing but odd mix of styles and sounds, this is a somewhat confusing but a strangely attractive album that stands out miles from the rest of the charts.

Written by Moscow-born New York-based songwriter Regina Spektor, the songs are an unusual cross between the music of Kate Bush and Bjork, with the storytelling skills of them both, along with the high and varied vocal range to test your hearing to the limit!

A series of stories, told through the medium of song, the album is quite an interesting mix of styles, and isn't as heavy as I imagined it would be.

The 12 tracks are quite magical, each with their own theme, and seem more akin to the pages of a story book or brothers Grimm fairytale than to an album.

However this is also a strange mix of styles and not one that I would want to re-listen to many times, although I'm sure it will soon gather pace as quite a cult album, appealing to a younger niche market.
