A BOLD scheme to build a new Christopher Whitehead Language College in St John's could be doomed before it is even fully discussed because of a lack of the cash.
The Worcester News has learned that plans have been put forward for a brand-new building on a previously unconsidered site.
The Earls Court Farm East site - the field behind Tudor Way and Howard Road at the end of Oldbury Road - was regarded as a "golden option" by many at the council (see panel on page two).
However, as the field is earmarked as available for housing, it has a high price tag - putting it out of reach of Worcestershire County Council.
Many at the council are laying the blame squarely at the door of the Government, which is widely seen to have offered the cash and then withdrawn it.
Richard Hubbard, the county director of children's services, said: "While we believe there are merits to this site, in light of the £12m DfES funding not being available and the Government's recent budget settlement, this option needs to be re-examined."
The latest rejection will dismay staff, parents and governors who have been pressing for an early resolution to the problems at Chrissies, which suffers from pupil overcrowding and crumbling buildings.
A plan to build a new school at Grove Farm, near Rushwick on the outskirts of Worcester, paid for by Tesco, which would then build a supermarket on the old site, has been abandoned.
Worcester MP Mike Foster said:
Council can't pay for school's dream site

"This is an imaginative plan that deserves the full support of the local community. The benefits for the people of St John's are vast.
"It is disappointing the county council has had other priorities - namely restructuring all of Kidderminster schools. It seems the county council is throwing in the towel before having fully explored the funding options. One has to question why.
"I'm willing to work at making this plan a reality but it seems the county council is showing only lukewarm support."
Why this is a 'golden option for Chrissies
It allows the present Bromwich Road site to be freed up and sold off for housing with the money then ploughed back into a new Chrissies.
There are few planning considerations as the land is already earmarked for housing.
It is within walking distance from most of the school's catchment area.
As a greenfield site, development would be relatively quick and easy.
The accesses are adequate and easy to upgrade.
People from Dines Green would have new facilities.
The proximity to the new Worcester University offers the sharing of sports and academic facilities.
