Appalled at sex offender cases

From the archive, first published Monday 23rd Jan 2006.

SIR - As a parent of school age children, I am absolutely appalled that the Secretary of State for Education, Ruth Kelly, had overruled police and allowed a registered sex offender to become a PE teacher. Has this Labour Government learnt nothing? Was the tragedy that occurred in Soham not enough?

The whole idea of criminal record checks are to ensure that the most vulnerable in society should enjoy protection.

It does make one wonder if this person had applied at the school where Ms Kelly's children attended whether she would have had second thoughts.

MARK BRUNNER,

Redditch.
