100 years ago January 20, 1906

THE down and outs and poor of the district of Bromsgrove enjoyed a very welcome bonus as a result of Lord Windsor's belated coming of age celebrations. An impressive 138 adults, who were in receipt of outdoor relief from the town's workhouse, were each given a half crown, (12.5p) and 22 children were presented with a shilling (5p) to mark the occasion. The cash was a gift from a committee formed to organise the celebrations. An idea to stage a dinner had not been proceeded with and a planned fireworks display in the Mount Field in College Road was abandoned due to bad weather.   more...

Local History Society: On a Wing and a Prayer - the Cathedral Builders, was the title of a talk by Keith Cattell. The retired architect traced the techniques and skills used by cathedral builders from the fourth to the 20th centuries. The next talk, The Fairground Calendar will be presented by the society's chairman, Graham Downie. Mr Downie, as secretary of the Showmen's Guild, is an authority on the history of fairs. The society's AGM will precede the talk so the evening will start earlier than usual at 7.45pm on Wednesday, February 8, at The Greig Centre.   more...

People on the register - but with no or incorrect details - face the possibility of a fine of £2,500. This exposes the fact that ID cards are purely a way to control us.
