They don't even pay full price

From the archive, first published Monday 26th Sep 2005.

AM I the only one who thinks it odd the two main groups planning to disrupt fuel supplies and blockade roads are people who don't even pay the full pump price ?

They talk about the £5 gallon. However, hauliers get the VAT refunded and farmers not only get a similar refund, but they burn tax-free red diesel.

Why else would you see the Customs & Excise checking what fuel farmers had in their Land Rovers and cars at markets?

To save fuel, lower emissions and help to stop damage to our roads, I suggest a lower speed limit for lorries.

There should be a speed limit of 50 mph on the motorways, with stiff penalties for exceeding it. This would not only save fuel and emissions, but free up a lane because two lorries side-by-side for several miles would then be a thing of the past.

Another safety feature should be the enforcement of a minimum space between lorries.
