It's hard to believe that heavy showers and chilly winds at the beginning of July meant that, at the last minute, we had to abandon the idea of a summer garden meeting and meet at the village hall as usual. 100 years ago August 5, 1905

WILLIAM Bennett, of Dodford, a market gardener, was charged with driving a horse and cart in High Street without a light. Sergeant Parry said that when he held up his hand for the defendant to stop he took no notice and would have knocked him down if he had not jumped out of the way. The defendant said he did not see the sergeant and his son was holding a candle lamp in the cart. He was fined 2s 6d (12.5p) and 7s 6d (37.5p) costs.   more...

IT is fair to say Redditch has recieved some well justified criticisms recently - no bus service after 7pm, no cinema, poor leisure facilities and too many unemployed people who are quite capable of working but instead sponge off the benefit system and seem to spend their time committing crime.   more...

Time to act

While I admire the stamina of the SALT group in trying to save the town's lido, the time for talking has surely long past. What townspeople are now looking for is some form of positive action. The yellow ribbons stunt was never going to budge Wychavon Council, as the attitude of Christian-Brookes clearly demonstrates, but a threat to withhold that portion of the Council Tax which relates to the upkeep of the lido might just bring matters to a head.   more...

Alcester WI

The July meeting was held inside on a very warm evening, so it was particularly enjoyable to listen to a talk about the outdoors! The speakers, Rob and Dianne Cole of Meadow Farm, Feckenham, gave us a fascinating insight into their life as gardeners. Their talk which was illustrated by some beautiful slides, showed us how their garden had evolved with, it has to be said, Dianne appearing to do most of the heavy work - including laying over 800 paving slabs! They both said how lucky they are to be doing something which they both love and this certainly came over as Rob spoke about the plants they used and the way in which their garden was planned. Carole Pigeon thanked them on behalf of everyone for what had been a most enjoyable talk.   more...
