LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Members went on their annual August tour of churches in fine weather with chairman Guy Stapleton as their guide. All the churches were in Oxfordshire and included two in farmyards - at Spelsbury and Shorthampton. After visiting Chadlington and Minster Lovell the party of 35 went on for tea at Churchill village hall served by the local WI. The tour was organised by committee member Ray Poulton, who is also in charge of the final outing of the summer, a visit to Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge next Wednesday.   more...

SPECIAL MEETING: The unscheduled meeting of the parish council called to discuss the proposed building in Leys Road was held last Wednesday in the village hall and was attended by several residents from that area who were anxious to hear what the present situation is. The meeting was preceded by a talk to the councillors by PC Stephen Chidlow, the crime risk manager for the area, specialising in the setting-up of rural safety initiatives.   more...

GARDENING CLUB: The annual flower and produce show to be held on Saturday was the opening topic of the August meeting. Members were encouraged to enter the various categories and the show will have stalls selling cakes, produce and plants. The RHS handbook was available at the meeting to help answer any queries about the competition classes. On October 14 the club is visiting Nerine Nursery at Welland, and there are still places available for this visit. Members were informed that the Stratford Garden Centre (previously the Clifford Chambers Garden Centre) is holding a bulb planting day with demonstrations and talks on using bulbs in the garden. This is to be on September 11 and there will be price reductions for bulbs bought on this day.   more...
