ARTISTS from all over the country have submitted entries for a Malvern art competition with a £1,000 top prize.
Work from the 122 competitors will go on display on Sunday at the Oakdene Centre, St James's School, in West Malvern.
This follows the announcement tomorrow (Saturday) of the winner of the first prize, as well as the £500 second prize and five other £100 awards.
Entries have been submitted from as far afield as Norfolk, Liverpool and Wales for the Malvern Visual Arts Society's Open Exhibition 2003.
Organiser Ros Rowberry said she was impressed by the standard of the work.
"I'm blown over, the standard is wonderful. Every piece we open we're so excited about," she said.
Competitor Caro Sweet, a West Malvern sculptor, said: "There are competitions like this nationally but for the Malvern area it's fairly unique.
"It's nice because it gets people with different backgrounds involved. And it brings more interest from the public because they aren't seeing the same stuff."
However, Caro refuses to use competitions as a basis for her work.
"I do what I do because I love it and I'm committed to it," she said. "I tend to produce a body of work and if there's something I feel is suitable for competition I'll consider entering it. I won't work towards a competition entry, I feel it stifles your creativity."
The exhibition runs without interruption until Sunday, October 5, from 10am to 4pm. It then continues for three weeks, from Thursday to Sunday, before opening again daily from October 30 to November 4. Admission is free.
