Car buffs make their marque at club

From the archive, first published Thursday 3rd Jul 2003.

LOVERS of classic Volkswagens can share their passion with other car buffs by joining a new group.

The Kidderminster Volkswagen Owners' Club has already grown from five to 30 members since it was set up last month - and it is appealing for more to join.

It started after Mark Hughes and several colleagues at Kidderminster audio firm Klark Teknic realised they were all fans of the German marque.

"They've got the classic looks and character that cars today just don't have," said Mr Hughes.

He bought his first Beetles 18 months ago and currently drives a 1971 model.

He added: "If something goes wrong with them you can work on them yourself - it's simple mechanics."

Members meet on Thursday evening outside at the Watermill pub in Park Lane, Kidderminster, and then go for drives in the country.

A variety of vehicles are usually on show including modified Beetles and a rare split-screen camper van.

Mr Hughes added: "If you're into old Volkswagens, you can meet some like-minded people and add something to the group."

Anyone interested in joining the club should call Mr Hughes on 07958 023970.
