Musical inspiration in the hills

From the archive, first published Wednesday 12th Feb 2003.

"I felt that I must write and thank you for a most wonderful and highly unexpected evening of great music making. Upon arrival; for business

reasons, in Malvern from New York I was expecting to spend three days in a small town with very little to do.... I doubt if I will ever hear a finer performance of Strauss's sublime Oboe Concerto and Beethoven's Fifth was electrifying. In future I will ensure that my business trips to Malvern are planned with an ESO concert in mind.........."

So wrote a visitor to Malvern . . . . . . .

THE English Symphony Orchestra is presenting an exciting Spring Series 2003 in the Malvern Theatres with music for all.

If you have never attended a concert before then there is something in this series for you.

Attending a concert featuring the works of the great composers is an enriching and life-enhancing experience.

The ESO's 2003 Spring Series includes something for everyone and provides opportunities to explore music in a completely new way.

Take a loved one for a special Valentines Day Concert (Fri) for an evening of romantic music featuring the pianist Mark Bebbington in Tchaikovsky's passionate and romantic Piano Concerto No 1, music for Peer Gynt by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, Debussy's hauntingly beautiful l'apres midi d'un faune and Elgar's brilliant musical portrait of his friends - The Enigma Variations.

A new development by the ESO is a `Discovery Concert' (Feb 28) where Music Director William Boughton and the orchestra will take you on a journey of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.

"This presentation will not be dry and academic but full of fun and assist the audience to develop a greater understanding of this great work", says Mr Boughton.

For a full programme of the series it is advisable to contact the Malvern Theatres.
