Lesson in the absurd
From the archive, first published Thursday 3rd Oct 2002.
THE reason that councillors and the public attempted to frustrate Councillor Beardwood and Severn Waste Services' plans for incinerating waste was due to the fact they were entirely flawed and unacceptable (Decisions On Waste Are Tough, Shuttle/Times & News, September 26).
This was confirmed by the planning inspector in his recent report.
If the county council had prepared a waste local plan, seriously examined alternatives to incineration, carried out a valid consultation exercise and listened to the local communities, instead of trying to railroad their scheme through in secret, they might not be in the mess they are.
Nor would they have wasted over £950,000 of ratepayers' money, which is an absolute disgrace.
Let us hope they have learnt something from the absurd situation they have created.
